YouthQuest Highlights: January 2022

Packet Up

With Flint Community Schools moving to virtual learning in January, YouthQuest staff worked with the schools to put together take-home packets to help facilitate continued learning at home. Packets included fun learning activities for students such as word searches and crossword puzzles, reading comprehension workbooks and math flashcards. These packets, combined with virtual program, helped students stay engaged in education while at home.

Get Outside

To encourage outdoor play, students at Pierce Elementary received outdoor fun toys in the take-home packets they received from YouthQuest. Various toys included pinwheels, boomerangs and DIY paper guitars. Students were able to decorate their toys to fit their personality and were then able to go out and play, providing fun and rewarding exercise. Not only did students have fun, they were encouraged to stay active while at home.

Speak Up

At South Bendle Elementary, students were given the opportunity to speak up during program announcements at dinner. Each day, a question was posed to students and volunteers were able to come up to the front and share their responses. This allowed students to practice sharing their opinions while teaching them how to speak in public.

In My Hand

In Sustainability Club at International Academy of Flint, middle and high school students were able to participate in hands-on projects that focused on math, science and technology. Some of the projects they completed included making their own laundry detergent, soaps, candles and lip balm. During the projects, students were able to use math to measure, science to see how different ingredients react and technology using molds to create the projects.
