June 2020: YouthQuest Highlights

|

In the Kitchen

Pierce Elementary hosted virtual cooking classes, during which YouthQuest students learned how to make fun recipes, including no-bake cookies and Rice Krispies treats. Students also learned to make homemade croutons for a gourmet salad. The virtual class not only taught students about nutrition and how to bake and cook, but also focused on core math skills and provided an enriching experience.

At-Home Activities

To combat the summer slide going into June, YouthQuest staff at Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary provided a wide variety of videos for students to follow along with. Videos featured story time, science experiments and math games for students to play at home. Activity packets were sent home with more math games and science experiments, along with some literacy games. With these tools, students were able to learn while also having fun.

YouthQuest Feud

YouthQuest employees at Freeman Elementary coordinated a version of the classic game show “Family Feud.” Survey questions were sent to students to gather answers for the game. Staff then compiled the answers so other team members could compete against students in a friendly virtual match. Those who guessed the most common answers scored the most points. In the end, the students won against the staff and celebrated their success.

Keep it Moving

To ensure that students are getting enough physical fitness, YouthQuest staff at Eisenhower Elementary incorporated movement into every virtual session. No matter what students were learning that day, a portion of the session was dedicated to exercise. Lead learning guides had students participate in a light workout, which included stretching, jumping jacks and moving around. Then, older students took turns leading exercises as well.

YouthQuest is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
