Flint Promise Now Accepting Applications for Winter Semester

Calling all 2018 high school graduates: Are you a Flint resident starting college this winter? Or did you enroll at Mott Community College this fall without applying for Flint Promise?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may be eligible to apply for the Flint Promise scholarship, which is awarded twice each year. Applications for the winter deadline are due by Nov. 15, 2018.

“The Flint Promise scholarship is a commitment to the city’s youth,” says James Avery, director of Education & Training for the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, which administers and operates the scholarship program. “It makes college more accessible and – in doing so – helps students pursue their dreams.”

According to Avery, the scholarship will cover up to 100 percent of an eligible student’s tuition and book fees after federal grants and other scholarships are applied. Additionally, Flint Promise students receive academic and personal support throughout his or her college career.

The scholarship may be used at Mott Community College for up to three academic years as a student pursues a certificate or associate degree. From there, students who earn an associate degree or transfer credit from Mott Community College may extend the scholarship for up to three academic years at the University of Michigan-Flint to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

To meet the scholarship’s eligibility requirements, applicants must:

• Graduate from a high school located within the city of Flint, or receive a GED in the city of Flint, in or after March 2018
• Reside within the city of Flint at the time of high school graduation
• Graduate with a 1.8 GPA or higher
• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA)
• Apply to participating college or university
• Be age 24 or younger

After completing the online application, available at theflintpromise.org, students will be contacted by a Flint Promise Success Coach to confirm their eligibility and ensure they’re on track to begin or continue classes in the winter.
