Employer Spotlight: Acument Global Technologies

Headquartered in Sterling Heights, Acument’s brick-and-mortar footprint spans more than 10 manufacturing and distribution facilities across North America. Of those locations, two just happen to be right around the corner in Grand Blanc.

“The Fontano Family – who owns us – they believe in manufacturing, they believe in manufacturing in the Midwest, and they believe in manufacturing in Michigan,” said Andy Lowe, human resources director for Acument. “There is zero intent to outsource. Our business is a steady model.” 

For those unfamiliar, Acument is the largest specialized fastener company in the world. Their products – think nuts, bolts, washers, screws, etc. – are used by everyone from Ford and General Motors to Whirlpool and Magna.

Behind those products are nearly 1,000 employees serving a variety of positions across the organization. They range from professionals in engineering and finance to sales, administrative functions, and manufacturing. And in many cases, they’ve been there for a while.

“When you take a look at the longevity of the team members, it’s nothing for them to have 20, 25, or even 30 years of experience,” Lowe said. “The dedication, commitment, and competency of our team members sets us apart.”

The reason for that loyalty comes down, in large part, to the company’s culture. According to Jennifer Brewer, senior human resources manager, despite the business’ size, it still maintains a mom-and-pop feel, with a focus on developing relationships and the talent within.

“Everyone has a different pathway,” Brewer said. “We have a two-year training (program for skilled operators), and we’re looking to develop an internal maintenance apprenticeship program. There’s a lot of opportunity for growth and development.”

The company also puts forth a variety of efforts to build employee morale. This includes an employee appreciation barbecue, where managers prepare and serve burgers for their teams during the summer. There’s also an employee committee that provides an open line of communication between management and staff.

According to Lowe, workers with a mechanical aptitude tend to thrive in the Acument workplace.

“What we do is very, very mechanical,” Lowe said. “It is literally nuts and bolts and turning wrenches. It’s banging steel. You have to like doing it, and those who like doing it do very well.”

What’s more, you don’t need a long resume to apply for an open position. According to Brewer, the company is more than open to job candidates who are fresh out of high school.

“You can get your foot in the door and make a career path,” Brewer said. “We’ll train you. You can learn our processes, and you can work your way up.”
