Partner Spotlight: Double Dragon Tang So Do

To add to YouthQuest’s programming, sites invite outside vendors into session to host clubs and activities. One of those vendors is Double Dragon Tang So Do – a local business that teaches basics in karate along with leadership, positive attitudes and confidence.

“Physical fitness, leadership and enrichment are three of the main components of YouthQuest,” says Dr. Kimberly Leverette, executive director of Flint & Genesee Education & Talent which administers YouthQuest. “We are happy to work with Double Dragon because they’re able to provide all three of those components in one program.”

Quiana Powell, known as Master Q in the World Tang So Do Association community, is the owner of Double Dragon and loves working with students.

“I have a great experience working with YouthQuest,” says Powell. “The best part is the kids and being able to provide our principles and curriculum to them.”

Double Dragon was first born in 2004 when it was opened by Powell’s father, Jeff Wheeler, who runs its original location. The goal of the karate school is to spread awareness of martial arts as a physical and mental discipline.

In YouthQuest, the organization provides martial arts classes along with lessons in confidence, self-awareness, self-discipline and stopping bullying.

Why is the partnership between YouthQuest and Double Dragon important?

In the social climate we are in right now, I think it’s important to have positive activities that promote social and emotional health, discipline and structure. It’s more than a physical program. It’s a mental program.

What does Double Dragon do for Flint?

We provide opportunities for families to come to be a part of our community. Beyond that, we have partnered with the Old Newsboys and have done food, backpack, bike and water giveaways. We require our students to participate in outreach in order to get their blackbelt to share the importance of giving back and leadership.

Why is YouthQuest important to the Flint area?

The program is important because it provides children with a healthy outlet and a space to be active. It provides such rich activities and is a safety net for children in the area that may not have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities.
