YouthQuest Highlights: December 2019

|

Build it Up

Elementary students at the International Academy of Flint learned how to work with their hands in the We Build It Club. Students participated in a variety of DIY projects such as making their own puppets. The skills reinforced in this club—including following directions and seeing a project through from beginning to end—are transferrable to all aspects of life. And at the end of the day, students were able to take home their projects to share with their families.

Supporting the Team

During December, Holmes STEM Academy hosted the Happy Holidayz Family Night on the same night as the school’s girls’ basketball game. The YouthQuest site wanted to bring additional support to members of the basketball team while providing engaging activities for the community. Parents and locals were able to celebrate what the program provides for Holmes STEM Academy students.

Experiencing New Culture

At Freeman Elementary, students took a field trip to the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth. There, students learned how to make pretzels and enjoyed the famous chicken dinner. Before going on their field trip, students learned about table etiquette while dining in public and then put that to the test during dinner. They ultimately did so well that staff at the restaurant complimented their good behavior.

Cookies & Cocoa

Students at Doyle-Ryder Elementary celebrated the holidays with a Cookies and Cocoa party. During the party, students were able to decorate cookies, make their own cocoa and participate in fun art projects and make-and-takes. The event was engaging for the students and a way for the students to have some fun after school.

YouthQuest is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
