On the Job: Ashley McCloud

Ashley McCloud became interested in serving her community while working on the Alternative Breaks Leadership Team at the University of Michigan-Flint. There, she served as an executive board member and helped plan service learning trips.

She has continued this commitment to service with AmeriCorps VISTA, an organization of national service programs that allow volunteers to address critical community needs. Through her work she has the opportunity to extend her reach through her work by connecting the University of Michigan-Flint to Flint Community Schools.

“I work with the schools to identify their needs and develop programs,” says McCloud. “I set up a work-study program with Doyle Ryder Elementary, started a dance program at Pierce Elementary and helped with SAT prep at Beecher High School.”

With all of her accomplishments, her favorite part of the work she does is the connections she is able to make with people in the community.

“I am currently applying for jobs in the non-profit sector,” says McCloud. “I want to be able to continue to serve in my next position.

How did you use the tools learned in TeenQuest to interview for this position?

In TeenQuest we did mock interviews. This was the first time I ever had an interview. I knew how to prepare for the interview, what to expect and how to handle myself.

What is a memorable lesson that stood out to you in TeenQuest?

They taught us to look at people’s noses if we were uncomfortable making eye contact so that it looked like we were looking them in the eyes.

What has your proudest moment been?

Graduating from college. It took me longer than four years, but I am proud that I stuck with it and finished.

What was your college experience like?

Overall, my college transcript was amazing, and I had great experiences. Some of my classes were challenges but I relied on help from my professors and peers. I joined clubs and got out of my comfort zone and proved that I could be a leader.

What advice would you give current TeenQuest students?

Stay true to yourself and don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Get to know a diverse group of people. You can learn so much from different cultures, gain respect for different backgrounds and build relationships.
