On February 22, high school students in Genesee County will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers in the health care industry.
Health Care Day, hosted by the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce and Diplomat, will offer breakout sessions covering corporate education, human relations, sales and marketing and more.
“Often, when people talk about jobs in health care, they think of doctors and nurses,” says Rhetta Hunyady, Vice President of Education & Training for the Flint & Genesee Chamber. “But there are many different career paths in this industry. Our goal is to introduce students to some of them.”
According to Hunyady, there are many reasons to consider pursuing a career in health care. For example:
- Health care is a rapidly growing industry
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the health care industry is projected to grow by 11.5 million jobs by 2026. Areas of employment seeing growth include home health aides, personal care aides and physician assistants. - There are a variety of career options
In addition to traditional medical professions, career paths include human resources, security, accounting, legal, marketing and technology. - The earning potential is above-average
Wages for health care workers are higher when compared to other industries. For example, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurse practitioners earn an annual mean wage of $94,822, more than twice the U.S. average. - It offers a fast-paced and flexible working environment
Health care facilities such as hospitals and clinics are open 24/7, giving the opportunity for a more flexible schedule. The environment is also very fast-paced. With the number of patients coming and going, you will be able to meet new people every day. - There are opportunities to give back to the community and help others
Working in the health care industry can be very rewarding because you are making a direct difference in another person’s life.
Registration for Health Care Day will be first come, first served for students who attend high school in Genesee County. Interested in participating? Email Amy Watts at awatts@flintandgenesee.org for details.
