YouthQuest Highlights: October 2021

Let There Be Light

During the month of October, YouthQuest sites participated in a variety of events to celebrate Lights on Afterschool, a nationwide event to celebrate and advocate for afterschool programs. During the events, students were able to participate in fun family festivals, Halloween-themed drive-thru events and more. In addition to the events, Lights on Afterschool Day was declared by both Mayor Sheldon Neely, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Flint School Board of Education.

Gotta be Fresh

At Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary, students participated in the Crim Fit Flint Fresh Program. Each week, students received food boxes with ingredients to cook healthy food at home. To learn how to make the meals, staff from the Crim Fitness Foundation joined YouthQuest to show the students. Students then got to go home and show their families their skills.

Color My World

Students were able to take the lead on a project making a colorful bulletin board at Pierce Elementary. To foster youth development and leadership, YouthQuest staff gave students the reins on decorating and coloring a bulletin board to hang in the school hallway. The board was created using butcher paper and pictures that made for a welcoming atmosphere.

An Apple a Day

Doyle Ryder students participated in a field trip to a local apple orchard. During their visit to Montrose Orchards, students learned about different aspects of a farm. Students also were able to see how the food that they eat is grown. The experience allowed students to step outside their typical day with an enriching activity.
