The city of Burton has received an exciting addition to its business landscape with the recent announcement of North Carolina-based Custom Air Handling Solutions, Inc. coming to the area. The arrival of the business will also mean the need for employees in the future. “If you go out 3-4 years, there’s no reason to think it wouldn’t be in the range of 50 to 60 team members” says Bradley Caplan, chief operating officer for Custom Air Handling Solutions, Inc.
Custom Air Handling Solutions, Inc., which makes custom air handling units, was founded five years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina by a Sales Engineer who wanted to change the business he knew so well. Over his years of working in the air handling industry, he saw areas that could be improved. In response, he designed and developed air handlers that could solve the many issues he had seen arise.
“The first unit he made, he made it with his hands in his garage with his family,” Caplan says. “To this day a lot of what he designed originally, although it’s been improved, is built into the core of what we make now.”
It is that seed of ingenuity that grew to become Custom Air Handling Solutions, Inc. Today, the business creates custom air handling equipment for hospitals, convention centers, universities, labs, and more, offering solutions to their heating and cooling needs.
“The word custom is in the name Custom Air Handling Solutions because we take on jobs that are truly custom. Each one has its own challenges. The needs of a hospital versus the needs of a pharmaceutical location or a convention center are all very different.”
Unlike larger companies that mass-produce a product for the market, Custom Air Handling Solutions, Inc. focuses on each customer separately to give them the exact solution they are looking for. It’s this focus on the individual customers and not the entire market that sets them apart. “Our advantage is that we’re proud to say we don’t have an automated production line,” Caplan says.” We have manufacturing and fabrication facilities that are ready to do whatever our customer needs.”
It’s the customer-focused approach that has led to their ability to expand into the Midwest. “We’re establishing a track record for providing quality units, and as we continue to do that, our reputation is just going to grow,” says Caplan.
The Burton facility is the newest addition to the company’s portfolio and was chosen over other sites. It is anticipated that this 50,000-square-foot facility will generate nearly $6 million in capital investment and will create many well-paying jobs with benefits. This site will allow the company to better serve this high-demand region. While they are just getting the facility ready, it won’t be long until it’s fully operational. With 10 team members currently working in the new facility, they are getting the framework in place to hire more people, with plans to be up and running by the middle of June.
As to what they are looking for in an employee, they want someone familiar with the science behind the core of their business and someone willing to be part of a team. “It’s very team-based.” Caplan says. “We like to have a group of people working on an air handling unit versus one person just moving from task to task. There’s a level of ownership there. We just like to get the work done, and if everybody’s getting the work done, we can have a good time and make it a great place to work.”
For Custom Air Handling Solutions, Inc., it’s as much about the employee as it is the client, because the heart of their business is the work and passion of their workforce. “What I can tell you about us is in every function of our company everybody knows everybody’s name,” says Caplan. “You’re going to know everybody, and you’re going to be in the spotlight. Your role will be important, and you will be counted on right away. For some people, that’s all they ever asked for. They just want to matter. They don’t want to be a number. They want to be a person, and they want to count.” And at Custom Air Handling Solutions, you will count. You will be a valued member of the team and a part of their continued growth.
“You will matter,” Caplan concludes. “You will be noticed. I think for most people that’s going to sound really good.”
